Spring, spring, spring...

This seems a bit like a recipe for disaster- potting soil hovering above my nice, white bedspread. However, spring is on its way and we must be prepared with flowers, flowers, flowers! Seeing as my room is sunny and occasionally warm it seems like the best place for the seedlings at the moment.

I spent some time this afternoon out in the garden working on this little project. The chickens were especially clingy for some reason and followed me around in a little group, pecking at my jeans and chatting away. Annabel even managed to knock over an entire pot of freshly planted snap dragons (note to housemates: anticipated a heavy concentration of snap dragons in one corner of the veggie box this summer).

Yesterday was Gem's birthday. She wanted to stay in and order Indian food, and so we had ourselves a nice little chicken-themed party at home.

Slightly out of line with the chicken theme was the geography-themed birthday cake. Ah well.

Paris...

Last weekend I met up with my friend Charles in Paris. We met a couple of years ago when we both worked in Uganda. He works in Afghanistan at the moment and had saved up his vacation in order to have a proper holiday.

There are quite a few pictures to wade through in this post, so I thought I'd cut right to the money shot to kick things off.

Behold! I got into Paris just before the sun was going down and Charles and I decided to begin the sightseeing right away after checking in to our hostel. We took the metro (Paris' version of the Underground) and I was just chatting away when I glanced to my left and saw this! It was quite lovely at night with all the lights.

Instead of asking one of the other 234, 234 tourists in the area to take a picture of us, we decided to try and do it ourselves. This is the best shot out of many, I'm afraid, but I like it.

Random shot of a Parisian intersection.

After checking out the Eiffel Tower (and me eating my first delicious crepe from a street vendor) we decided to head to Notre Dame. Charles has friends in Paris and we were going to meet them in front the cathedral. Charles and I consulted our map and decided that we could easily walk the distance as the map made the two locations appears to be rather close to one another. After over an hour of walking (and if you know me you'll know that I walk at a fairly brisk clip) we finally made it to Notre Dame. It wasn't so bad, in all honestly. We walked along the Seine the entire way and it was very beautiful with the water and the lights and the buildings.

Self portrait in front of Notre Dame while Charles was off looking for his friends.

The next day we went back to the Eiffel Tower and decided to go all the way to the top. Why not, right? How often are YOU in Paris?

And here's me.

After that we headed to the Louvre (we took the Metro this time- no more arduous walking tours!). I had three goals at the Lourve: 1) See the Mona Lisa, 2) See the Nike, and 3)See the Venus de Milo.

Check.

Check.

Check.

Still at the Louvre. Quite the doorway, eh?

I really can't tolerate movies where kids play evil characters. There is nothing creepier to me that an child with a black soul. Hence, this statue of a chubby little kid strangling a swan haunted me the rest of the day.

I like old stuff.

After the Louvre, Charles wanted to find a church that has some Napoleon-related historical significance. Here he is consulting his Lonely Planet for directions.

We found it...eventually! Then we had a bit of a rest on the steps before setting out to find supper. This turned out to be the second epic trek of the weekend because I said that I wanted to go to the Arc de Triomphe before we ate. Again, on the map, it looked to be close by. Again, it really wasn't. Again, the very long walk was quite lovely as it was along the Champs-Elysees.

We made it.

The next morning I had to head back to London and Charles went off to Germany to finish up his vacation. I had another crepe at the train station. I'd like my last meal to be a warm, Parisian crepe smothered in chocolate. Thank you, please.

Off to Platform 4! And then home.

Travels...

I just got back to London after a weekend away in Paris. I'm about ready to lapse into unconsciousness, but I thought I'd try and get up a quick blog post before I do.

This will not be a blog about Paris, however, as I need to catch up on the happenings of last week.

(To clarify, I really do go to school. Actually, I spend the majority of time there or at home working on assignments. I just don't take pictures of it, and it would make for some dull blogs. Right now I am beginning my last week of what is known as "C Block". If you never hear from me after tonight it's C Block got the best of me. Well, to be more accurate it will be because epidemiology got the best of me.)

So, a week ago two friends and I went down to Brighton for the day. I think I've mentioned a few times on this blog how much I truly love the sea (i.e. here, here, also here, here as well, etc) so I was rather excited to go.

Truth be told, it was a little chilly. Here are Hannah, Gemma and I smiling whilst braving the cold wind (and enjoying the complimentary lollipops that came with our fish and chips and mushy peas).

The general consensus was that the clouds and the light were amazingly beautiful.

After fish and chips and strolling and browsing in little shops we decided to end the day with tea and scones at a very eclectic and wonderful tea shop. Oh, the scones! The cream! The china!

We had to stop for gas on the way home but we parked on the wrong side of the pump. Hannah was confident that the hose would wrap all the way around the car. She was right.

And there was much rejoicing.
